Women Facing Forward
Progress is not linear. While significant strides have been made in women’s rights in recent decades, its impact remains uneven. Feminism has positively transformed lives worldwide, including mine. Yet, many women still lack fundamental rights, highlighting the ongoing struggle for equality. There is so much work yet to be done, and we must continue to push onward, hold onto progress tightly and face forward.
This and my daughter are the inspiration and motivation behind these pieces. Each one was born out of a spontaneous brush store, a gesture created by a woman’s hand—my own. A gentle touch which puts things in motion.
Embroidery and sewing have always been associated with the feminine. In a factory, in a drawing room, in a cave. Stitching clothes, tents, or a bleeding wound. Caring and healing have always been ‘the women’s work’. Using the thread to draw these women holds so much meaning to me. Especially on paper, because you must make a hole, change or destroy something in a controlled way, to create a new narrative. A new line, a new path, but always following a thread and leaving one behind.
